Surviving The Big Ones

Step back into the good ol' days  for a little while and walk with a young boy surviving "The Big Ones" and on into manhood

The Big Ones Were The Great Depression and WW II for everyone, and 1949 and marrige and 1952 and the Army for me.

Burma Shave Signs

BURMA SHAVE SIGNS??? Yes, back in the old days when everyone used straight razors or safety razors you used a shaving cream. Burma Shave was a popular brand. Their main advertising campaign consisted of a set of 5 or 6 related signs with a small, usually funny poem, but the last sign always said "Burma Shave". These signs were placed about a quarter of a mile apart, so we were always careful not to miss one and miss out on part of the rhyme. On a stretch of highway like from Houston to Dallas (200 Miles) there would be 5 or 6 sets of these signs.

There is a book entitled "The Verse by the Side of the Road" by Frank Rowsome, Jr that contains about 600 of the Burma Shave Roadside Rhymes. It was published by Stephen Greene Press Battleboro, Vermont in 1965 but has had some additonal printings. Get the book it is great and afford hours of humor.
