Surviving The Big Ones

Step back into the good ol' days  for a little while and walk with a young boy surviving "The Big Ones" and on into manhood

The Big Ones Were The Great Depression and WW II for everyone, and 1949 and marrige and 1952 and the Army for me.

The Poll Tax

The first things the yankees did after the War Of Northern Aggression ended in 1865, was to free the slaves and send yankee carpet baggers through out the defeated south to run all of Southern State and local governments as a punishment to the southerners for trying to have their own country. By then, the yankees had forgotten they had done exactly the same thing to rule their own country without England. The second thing was to take away the right to vote from anyone known to fight for or help the Confederate States of America's government in any way. Then all the ex-slaves were brought to the polls and instructed to vote for the black candidates and yankees that the carpet baggers had put on the ballots for public offices. After a few years of the black ex-slaves and yankees filling all govermental functions in the southern states, the southern whites were allowed to vote again.

Of course the poll tax didn't work to well after segregation
begin disapearing, as shown by the receipt above .

Of course, the first thing the Texans did was to start working on ways to decrease the numbers of black voters. Probably one of the most effective solutions was the introduction of the "Poll Tax". No one in Texas could vote without showing a "Poll Tax" receipt for the current year. Even though the price for the "Poll Tax" was comparably small, most blacks after the War Of Northern Aggression were farmers. They were either share croppers or renters who saw very little if any cash money and couldn't afford to pay for the privilege of voting. At the same time of course, it also kept many poor whites, who were considered undesirable, from voting. This in effect allowed the wealthier white politicians to regain their former positions and continue to rule all forms of governmental positions in the Southern States.
